School Uniforms: An Opportunity For Fashion Fun

You may feel relieved that your daughter's school has implemented a new uniform policy. After all, this makes it easy for your teen or tween to get dressed every day without any fuss. There will be no arguments about school-appropriate clothing, no whining about her not having anything to wear. A uniform makes your life much easier. But for your daughter, a school uniform policy probably feels like the kiss of fashion death. How is she supposed to express her individuality? How can she add flair that is unique to her when the policy is for all the kids to dress the same?

Step 1: School's Rules

The first thing you and your daughter will want to do is check the school's handbook and be sure you are well aware of all the policies that have to do with dress code and appearance. It won't be a boon to her self-esteem if expressing style is cause for disciplinary action. Take your school's rules into consideration as you read the rest of these suggestions and as you dream up some of your own ideas.

Step 2: Hair Dare

Probably the most impactful way to stand out in a sea of uniforms is to have great hair. Whether it's a dramatic new color or a great new style, good hair can make a young lady feel confident in her appearance. Not ready for drastic changes? Use cute clips, decorative headbands and interesting daily do's to keep her hair funky and fun, just like her. Her uniform may match everyone else's, but her hair can be fabulously unique.

Step 3: Bag Swag

She's got to have a bag for her books, right? A backpack or messenger bag in a bold pattern or a bright color will contrast nicely against muted uniform colors, but it's not just about the bag. It's also about what's on the bag. Buttons and pins with fun pictures and phrases, amusing keychains that hang from zipper pulls, even her name or initials monogrammed on the bag can all showcase her personality while adhering to school policy.

Step 4: Coat Gloat

A lot of the school year takes place in cooler weather, and while it may be "uniform only" inside, outside she's going to need a jacket or coat. As long as it falls within dress code parameters, fabulous outerwear is a wonderful way to show off her style. Choose something fashion-forward and flattering, like a bold pea coat, or something classic with a fresh twist like a bright, belted trench coat. Either way, her coat is a surefire way to show her personal spark. And don't forget the hat, mittens and scarves for the really cold days!

These ideas are just the tip of the fashion iceberg. Consider what your daughter likes to wear on non-uniform days. What can you work into her uniform days that complies with school rules but displays her individuality? Think head-to-toe. Think accessories. Think beyond the uniform. Together you and your tween or teen should be able to come up with ways to make school uniforms as great for her as they are for you.
