Clear Braces: The Clear Choice Over Metal

The traditional "braceface" image is one of a teenager with a mouth full of shiny and very conspicuous metal. Times are changing, though: Clear braces, also known as invisible braces, are starting to become popular with patients of all ages, including adults. Naturally, the most obvious benefit of clear braces is that they aren't nearly as obvious as metal ones, giving you with a more attractive appearance. However, that's not the only benefit. Below, find out two more significant reasons that clear braces are the clear choice over metal today.

They Are More Comfortable

Patients may have to use dental wax to cover the rough wire edges in the mouth, making a lumpy and uncomfortable mess. Wires attached to brackets on metal braces can also snap, leaving longer pieces of exposed wire poking into the inner mouth. Rubber bands can pull painfully at the metal brackets, as well. During adjustments at the dentist, metal braces can be particularly painful. Tightening of metal braces is done every four to six weeks, and the mouth may feel sore for days afterwards.

In contrast, clear braces are crafted from a dental-grade plastic. Patients use retaining trays which are custom-molded to each person's mouth. Approximately every two weeks, the current set of trays will be switched out for new custom trays. Each set of trays will gradually shift teeth further into proper position. These retaining trays eliminate the need for adjustment implements like wires and rubber bands. There is nothing but smooth plastic between your teeth and your inner mouth, making invisible braces by far the more comfortable option.

They Are Removable

Once metal braces are placed on the teeth, they will remain there for 18 months to two years in most cases. This leaves you with no chance to be braces-free, even for a short rest. While dentist generally recommend wearing invisible braces full-time, patients do get the opportunity to remove them for short periods every day.

During meals and during brushing, invisible braces should be removed. This allows patients to enjoy the feeling of freedom for a while each day. While the invisible braces are off, patients can evaluate their smile in the mirror, making it easy to monitor straightening progress.

While you may have always equated braces with metal, that is no longer the case. If you are looking for an invisible option in braces that also happens to be comfortable and removable, clear braces may be the perfect choice. For more information, contact Gregory W.
