Have Bunions? What You Can Do

If you recently went to the doctor and found out that you have bunions, you might be surprised at the diagnosis and confused as to what you can or should do about it. Bunions may be painful and uncomfortable conditions, but they are treatable and manageable once you know what you are dealing with. Get to know some of the self-care techniques and treatments you should consider for your bunions so you can begin experiencing bunion pain relief as soon as possible. 

Change Your Footwear

When you have bunions, choosing the wrong footwear can be excruciatingly painful and difficult to deal with. As such, you will want to change the shoes that you wear on a regular basis to accommodate your new support and space needs. 

Choose shoes that have wider width and provide extra cushioning and support. Preferably, these would be orthopedic shoes or at the very least well-cushioned athletic shoes. These will prevent unnecessary pressure from befalling your bunions. 

Use a Brace or Bunion Pad

Another self-care option that can help you to deal with your bunions is to use a brace or a bunion pad on your bunions. The pad option is merely a way to add extra cushioning on and around your bunion. 

The brace option, on the other hand, helps to stabilize your foot and prevent a bunion from worsening and growing larder. It is a good idea to get your brace from a certified podiatrist so that you can be sure it is perfectly fitted to the specific structure of your foot and the size of your bunion. 

Consider Surgery

If the conservative self-care options do not do enough to relieve the pain in your feet, you may wish to consider surgical options for your bunions. There are several different types of surgery that you may want to think about when you are planning to go with this option. 

One of the options is to remove some of the swollen and irritated tissues around the bunion can be removed. Alternatively, for particularly large or problematic bunions, the physician may opt to remove some of the bone to help straighten out the big toe. However, this may also need to be accompanied by procedures to realign the longer bones of the foot or even to fuse the joint to ensure that the toe remains straight. 

With these options in mind, you can be sure that you are doing everything you can to properly deal with your bunions.
