Mistakes To Avoid When Choosing An Antihistamine

If you have recently discovered that you have a seasonal allergy issue, then you likely want to treat the allergies so you feel better. Most people will take antihistamines that stop the body from releasing the inflammation causing chemical, histamine. If you have never taken antihistamines, then you make a few common antihistamine mistakes. Keep reading to learn about a few of these that you should avoid.

Taking A First Generation Medication

There are certain classifications of antihistamines and the medicines are called first- and second-generation drugs. You may be familiar with the medications in each of these classifications. First generation medicines include Benadryl. If you know anything about this medicine, then you likely understand that it causes drowsiness. In fact, diphenhydramine, the active ingredient in Benadryl, is the same active ingredient in Tylenol PM and other nighttime sleeping aids.

All first-generation antihistamines have the same sort of drowsiness effect on the user. So, you probably want to skip these medicines and opt for a second-generation variety instead. These medicines do not cause drowsiness like the first-generation types. They include Zyrtec, Allegra, and Claritin.

There are a few third-generation antihistamines too, but they are very similar to the second-generation types. Xyzal is an example. It is wise to try the second-generation medicines first to see if they work because the newer medications are typically more expensive.

Taking More Than One Antihistamine

Some people will take two different antihistamines at the same time; this is not recommended because the medicines work in a similar manner and this would be like taking a double dose of medication. For example, you would not take an Advil and Tylenol together. If you think that one antihistamine is not working for you, then wait 24 hours to try a different variety.

Also, do not take two doses of the same antihistamine. This will not increase the effect of the medication. It is likely to exacerbate the side effects of the medicine though, like dry mouth and drowsiness.

If you feel like you need an additional allergy treatment medicine, you can use an allergy spray with your oral antihistamine. Allergen blocking sprays and steroidal ones are both options available to you. Your allergy doctor may also suggest the use of both of these sprays in addition to the oral antihistamine, so ask the professional if this is best for your condition.

If you want to know more about antihistamines and other treatments that can help reduce your allergy symptoms, speak with your local allergist.
